Please note that accommodations remain closed to the public. \nThe observance of Buddha’s Joyful Day on the full moon day of the seventh lunar month is based on the story of Maudgalyayana\, a disciple of the Buddha\, who discovered through his meditative powers that his mother had been reborn as a hungry ghost. Distressed\, he approached the Buddha for help\, who then advised him to make offerings to the Sangha\, as the merit from doing so would help relieve the suffering of his mother and other beings in the lower realms. Buddha’s Joyful Day is observed by making offerings of necessities to monastics\, reciting sūtras and performing acts of generosity. The merit from these deeds is dedicated to all beings\, especially to relieve the suffering of the deceased. \n  \nAugust 12 (Friday) \n6:00 am | Thousandfold Lamp Offering (Tong Chö)\nA traditional Tong Chö of 1\,000 butter lamps\, 1\,000 bowls of saffron water and 300 bowls filled with rice\, incense and flowers is offered weekly\, accompanied by chanting of the Chenrezig practice. \n7:30 am | His Holiness the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa Commemoration of Gampopa’s Parinirvana\nThe teaching and chanting with tsok will be webcast on YouTube Karmapa Teachings channel\, Karmapa Facebook\, and www.dharmasvara.org. The Gyalwang Karmapa will teach in Tibetan\, but simultaneous translation will be available in Chinese\, English\, French\, German\, Indonesian\, Korean\, Nepali\, Polish\, Portuguese\, Spanish\, Russian\, and Vietnamese. \nYou can download the Gampopa sadhana here. \n  \n\n\nAugust 13 (Saturday) \nPlease join us as we make prayers and offerings for our parents\, ancestors\, and the deceased through a special recitation of the Amitabha sadhana with tsok offerings\, a fire puja for the deceased\, and aspiration prayers for the well being of us and all other beings\, especially those to whom we dedicate the practice by name\, both living and deceased. \n10:00 am | Chanting of Long Amitabha Sadhana\n1:30 pm | Continuation of chanting of Long Amitabha Sadhana with Tsok\, Jangchok Sadhana\, followed by Sür (special fire offering ceremony) \nFor information on how to join us via ZOOM\, please click here.  \n\nThe practice entitled ‘Jangchok’ will be included within the chanting of the Amitabha sadhana.  Jangchok is done for the benefit of the recently deceased to achieve liberation.  For persons who may have passed away a long time ago the Jangchok practice will still bring great blessings to the deceased and create the causes and conditions for the liberation of the person.  For the living\, it is said that once their karmic debtors are liberated through this practice\, the person will have less obstacles.  For all beings\, this practice will help to create favorable conditions and enhance their well-being. \nIt is said that\, “no matter how long ago your deceased dear ones or relatives have passed away\, it is still very vital to make prayers and offerings for them to increase their merit.” \nDuring the chanting of the Long Amitabha and Jangchok sadhanas all the names of the deceased will be blessed and burned to symbolize purification of their defilements\, obscurities and negative karma by the fire of wisdom\, ripening their merit to be reborn in Amitabha’s pureland of Dewachen. Please note that accommodations remain closed to the public. \nThe resident sangha of PTC will be participating in a variety of chanting events to dispel obstacles and bring about auspicious conditions. \nJuly 2\, Saturday | Gya Shi\, The Practice of the Four Hundred Offerings \nGya Shi is a practice involving four hundred offerings – 100 tsa-tsas\, 100 butterlamps\, 100 tormas\, 100 chambu (effigies) – that is done as a means to purify obstacles created by the four maras (mental afflictions\, attachment to happiness\, clinging to the five skandhas\, death). \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nJuly 3\, Sunday | Sherab Nyingpo\, a practice based on the Heart Sutra \n \nSherab Nyingpo is an obstacle-averting practice that dispels unfavorable circumstances and promotes good conditions. The Heart Sutra is recited repeatedly as a means to purify obstacles created by the four maras (mental afflictions\, attachment to happiness\, clinging to the five skandhas\, death). SUMMARY:Nyungne Retreat - The Fasting Ritual and Meditation of Thousand-Armed Chenrezig
DESCRIPTION:The Maitreya Shrine Room is open to vaccinated day guests. All visitors are required to wear masks. Please note that overnight accommodations are not open to the public at this time. \n  \nThe resident sangha of PTC will be practicing 8 consecutive sets of Nyungne (the Fasting Ritual and Meditation of Thousand-Armed Chenrezig). This retreat will be held during the auspicious month of Sakadawa\, the month commemorating the birth\, enlightenment and parinirvana of Shakyamuni Buddha. It is said that\, during this time\, the merit accumulated through performing virtuous activity is multiplied 100\,000 times. \nThe Nyungne practice is a profound kriya tantra meditation ritual based on loving-kindness and compassion in the form of Thousand-Armed Chenrezig.  The practice involves maintaining strict vows and meditating while reciting mantras and prayers\, and performing prostrations and visualizations. Undertaken in sets of two days\, the first day includes one vegetarian meal at noon\, drinking water throughout the day as needed. The second day is a complete fast performed in noble silence. If you would like to participate\, please click here. \n  \nThe sangha of PTC will be making prayers and offerings for our parents\, ancestors\, and the deceased through a special recitation of the Amitabha sadhana with tsok offerings and aspiration prayers for the well being of ourselves and all other beings\, especially those to whom we dedicate the practice by name\, both living and deceased. \nThe practice entitled ‘Jangchok’ will be included within the chanting of the Amitabha sadhana.  Jangchok is done for the benefit of the recently deceased to achieve liberation.  For persons who may have passed away a long time ago the Jangchok practice will still bring great blessings to the deceased and create the causes and conditions for the liberation of the person.  For the living\, it is said that once their karmic debtors are liberated through this practice\, the person will have less obstacles.  For all beings\, this practice will help to create favorable conditions and enhance their well-being. \nDuring the chanting Lama Tsering Dakpa will bless and burn all the names of the deceased to symbolize purification of their defilements\, obscurities and negative karma by the fire of wisdom\, ripening their merit to be reborn in Amitabha’s pureland of Dewachen. DESCRIPTION:Because of heightened covid rates in the area\, these events are closed to the public.\nTo join us via Zoom please click here.\n\nDecember 4 – 13\, 2021\nThe resident sangha of PTC will be participating in a variety of chanting events to dispel obstacles and bring about auspicious conditions.  The dates are listed below. \nDecember 4\, Saturday | Gya Shi\, “The Practice of the Four Hundred Offerings” \n\nGya Shi is a practice involving four hundred offerings which is done as a means to purify obstacles created by the 4 maras (mental afflictions; attachment to happiness; clinging to the 5 skandhas; death).  The four hundred offerings are described in the practice text below: \nNamo! \nThe vast offerings of Gya Shi are dedicated to the accumulation of merit and wisdom. \nThrough the blessings of offering 100 tsa-tsa\, may all beings engage in the 10 virtues and give up the 10 non-virtues. \nThrough the merit of offering 100 butterlamps\, may all beings clear away the darkness of ignorance so that the 5 wisdoms may be realized. \nThrough the merit of offering 100 tormas\, may all beings be free from famine. \nThrough the merit of offering 100 chambu (effigies)\, may all beings purify all karmic debt which makes harmful hindrances. \nThough the blessing of reciting the profound sutras\, may all beings always turn the wheel of dharma. Through the roots of virtue of offering 400\, may myself and all patrons and their loved ones repay all karmic debts. May we perfect the two accumulations and attain the precious level of unsurpassable enlightenment. \n  \nDecember 5\, Sunday | Sherab Nyingpo\, a practice based on the Heart Sutra \n \nSherab Nyingpo is an obstacle averting practice that dispels unfavorable circumstances and prompts good conditions. The Heart Sutra is recited repeatedly as a means to purify obstacles created by the 4 maras (mental afflictions; attachment to happiness; clinging to the 5 skandhas; death). The practice invokes the blessings of Prajnaparamita\, the Mother of all Buddhas. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nDecember 10-12\, Friday-Sunday | Drolma Yuldok\, a practice based on the 21 Taras \n \nThis three-day practice based on the 21 Taras known as ‘Drolma Yuldok’  is chanted to remove obstacles and bring auspicious conditions.  The central content of the chanting is the 21 Praises of Tara repeated with various offerings and prayers. \n  \nChanting Schedule:\nFriday & Saturday | 9am & 2pm\nSunday | 9am \nYou may view this practice remotely on Zoom. Green Tara\, often referred to as “The Mother of Liberation\,” is known for her swift activity in dispelling fears\, obstacles and illness.\nNoon| Lunch\n1:30 pm| Animal Liberation through Fish Release (no Zoom)\n2:30 pm| Sür\, Evening Fire Offering Ceremony\nSür (evening fire offering ceremony) is an offering to the 4 guests: the Buddhas & Bodhisattvas; Protectors; sentient beings; and those with whom we have karmic debts. SUMMARY:The Perfection of Merit for Lhabap Duchen
DESCRIPTION:About Nyungnye and Lhabap Duchen \nBuddhahood is the state in which one spontaneously and effortlessly benefits oneself and all beings without exception. In order to attain this state\, we must perfect the accumulations of merit and wisdom. Through the perfection of the two accumulations\, we purify our notions of self and other and realize the true nature of mind. \nThe resident sangha of PTC will be participating in the practice of Nyungne (the Fasting Ritual and Meditation of Thousand-Armed Chenrezig). The Nyungne practice is a profound kriya tantra meditation ritual based on loving-kindness and compassion in the form of Thousand-Armed Chenrezig. The practice involves maintaining strict vows and meditating while reciting mantras and prayers\, and performing prostrations and visualizations. Undertaken in sets of two days\, the first day includes one vegetarian meal at noon\, drinking water throughout the day as needed. The second day is a complete fast performed in noble silence. The Nyungne is renowned as a superior means to purify negative karma and accumulate great merit. \nThe fasting day for this Nyungne falls on October 27\, the auspicious occasion of Lhabap Duchen\, commemorating Lord Buddha’s return from the Tushita realm. This is followed by the short liturgy of Shitro (Peaceful and Wrathful Deities)\, a profound practice from the cycle of teachings and meditations of the Tibetan Book of the Dead. He became a monk at the age of eight and trained at a small monastery under the tutelage of Very Venerable Drubsing Rinpoche. He received his novice ordination from H.H. the 16th Karmapa. From His Eminence the 3rd Jamgon Kongtrul he received the full ordination to be a bhikkhu. He studied many fundamental Tibetan Buddhist texts including the Jewel Ornament of Liberation\, the Precious Garland of the Supreme Path\, the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life\, and the Tibetan Grammar Situ Drelchen by the 8th Tai Situpa from the Very Venerable Khunnu Lama Tenzin Gyaltsen Rinpoche\, one of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s teachers. Lama Tenam graduated first in his class in both his undergraduate and graduate Buddhist studies at Sarnath Tibetan University\, Varanasi\, India. \nFrom Guru Vajradhara H.H. Chamgon Kenting Tai Situpa\, he received the complete transmissions of the eight major lineages of Vajrayana Buddhism and twice detailed instructions on the three main Mahamudra texts by the 9th Karmapa. He also received numbers of personal instructions from H.H. the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa and served him from 2000 to 2004. \nGuru Vajradhara His Holiness Chamgon Kenting Tai Situpa is Lama Tenam’s Root Guru who has been guiding his personal dharma practices as well as daily life.
