SUMMARY:Study Group on The 37 Practices of a Bodhisattva
DESCRIPTION:In light of concerns about the coronavirus outbreak\, to protect the well-being and safety of everyone\, Palpung Thubten Chöling Monastery is temporarily suspending public events and attendance by visitors. \n  \nIf you would like to participate\, please use our online event registration form.\n \n  \nLed by Lamas Depa and Lhadrun\, we will explore in depth The 37 Practices of a Bodhisattva; a classic text in the Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism that remains vividly applicable to life in the 21st-century West. It was written by Gyalse Ngulchu Togme Zangpo\, a humble 14th-century monk\, as a reminder to himself of his aspirations for traveling the path of a bodhisattva and using everything that happened to him as a basis for awakening. How can a 14th-century Tibetan text be relevant to the very different lives we lead now? Because we still face the same basic human situations Togme Zangpo did in his day\, and have the same emotional reactions that keep us cycling in samsara. Thus\, Togme Zangpo’s advice remains as relevant today as when it was first composed. \n  \nWe will be using two main books – Traveling the Path of Compassion by Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje and The Heart of Compassion by Dilgo Khyentse – as well as a supplementary book – Reflections on Silver River by Ken McLeod. They are recommended but not required for participation. \n  \nNewcomers are welcome any Tuesday. There are no prerequisites and no attendance requirement.

SUMMARY:Commemoration of Chökor Duchen
DESCRIPTION:The PTC sangha will be commemorating Chökor Duchen\, the day that Buddha Shakyamuni Buddha first turned the Wheel of Dharma\, teaching the Four Noble Truths. \nAfter the Buddha realized awakening beneath the Bodhi tree\, he remained in contemplation. At first he was reluctant to teach\, fearing that people would not understand his message. Finally\, encouraged by Indra and Brahma\, he shared his discovery of the truth in his first teaching. This auspicious day is a “multiplying day” on which karmic results are said to be multiplied by one hundred million\, so we make this a joyful opportunity to practice extra virtue. \n6:30am | Thousandfold Lamp Offering (Tong Chö)\nA traditional Tong Chö of 1\,000 butter lamps\, 1\,000 bowls of saffron water and 300 bowls filled with rice\, incense and flowers is offered weekly\, accompanied by chanting of the Chenrezig practice. \n  \nThe chanting and teaching sessions which follow are being offered remotely.\nFor information on how to join us via ZOOM\, please click here. \n  \n10:00am | Kalu Rinpoche’s Practice of Aspiration Prayers (Monlam Choga)\, followed by the Short Practice of the Peaceful & Wrathful Deities (Shitro)\nChanting of the Monlam Choga\, a practice of offering and aspiration prayers compiled by Dorje Chang Kalu Rinpoche. This is followed by the short liturgy of Shitro (Peaceful and Wrathful Deities)\, a profound practice from the cycle of teachings and meditations of the Tibetan Book of the Dead. We dedicate this practice to the deceased in order to purify negativities\, avert obstacles in the bardo\, and establish a connection with the deities that will ripen in future lives. \n  \n1:30pm | A teaching on Buddha Shakyamuni’s life story and the Four Noble Truths. \nFor those who wish to sponsor butterlamps\, the chanting\, or the tea served during the chanting\, please be sure to include a prayer with your donation which will be read aloud to the assembly. \nClick here to to sponsor butterlamps. To sponsor the chanting and tea service make your donations on-line or simply mail your tax-deductible contribution to: \nPalpung Thubten Chöling\nAttn: Office\n245 Sheafe Road\, Wappingers Falls\, NY 12590. \n  \nPlease make checks payable to Palpung Thubten Choling or PTC. For credit card payments\, fax your credit card number (VISA or MasterCard only)\, along with the expiration date and signature and the amount you would like to charge to (845) 297-5761. For your protection\, please do not email your credit card information. \nAs of July 1 we welcome visitors to join us for lunch in the Maitreya dining room\, and ask that you let us know in advance by emailing us at:  reservations@kagyu.com. We regret that the dining room will not be open for other meals at this time. \nOvernight accommodations will also be available for fully vaccinated guests only. If you would like to stay at the monastery\, please make reservations in advance using our online form. \nIf you need assistance with making your reservation\, please email reservations@kagyu.com.
