SUMMARY:Nyungne Retreat - The Fasting Ritual and Meditation of Thousand-Armed Chenrezig
DESCRIPTION:The resident sangha of PTC will be practicing 8 consecutive sets of Nyungne (the Fasting Ritual and Meditation of Thousand-Armed Chenrezig). This retreat will be held during the auspicious month of Saga Dawa\, the month commemorating the birth\, enlightenment and parinirvana of Shakyamuni Buddha. It is said that\, during this time\, the merit accumulated through performing virtuous activity is multiplied 100\,000 times. \nThe Nyungne practice is a profound kriya tantra meditation ritual based on loving-kindness and compassion in the form of Thousand-Armed Chenrezig.  The practice involves maintaining strict vows and meditating while reciting mantras and prayers\, and performing prostrations and visualizations. Undertaken in sets of two days\, the first day includes one vegetarian meal at noon\, drinking water throughout the day as needed. The second day is a complete fast performed in noble silence. The Nyungne is renowned as a superior means to purify negative karma and accumulate great merit. \nChenrezig himself declared that completing even one Nyungne prevents rebirth in the lower realms\, and the practice of eight consecutive Nyungne leads to birth in Amitabha’s pure land of Dewachen. \n  \nThe dates for each set are as follows:\n\nSet 1   Begins May 16 (Saturday) at 5:30 am.  Ends May 18 (Monday) about 8:00 am.\nSet 2   Begins May 18 (Monday) at 5:00 am.  Ends May 20 (Wednesday) about 8:00 am.\nSet 3   Begins May 20 (Wednesday) at 5:00 am.  Ends May 22 (Friday) about 8:00 am.\nSet 4   Begins May 22 (Friday) at 5:00 am.  Ends May 24 (Sunday) about 8:00 am.\nSet 5   Begins May 24 (Sunday) at 5:00 am.  Ends May 26 (Tuesday) about 8:00 am.\nSet 6   Begins May 26 (Tuesday) at 5:00 am.  Ends May 28 (Thursday) about 8:00 am.\nSet 7   Begins May 28 (Thursday) at 5:00 am.  Ends May 30 (Saturday) about 8:00 am.\nSet 8   Begins May 30 (Saturday) at 5:00 am.  Ends June 1 (Monday) about 8:00 am. \n  \nThis event is in-person only.  It will not be accessible remotely. \n  \nGuests are welcome to participate in any or all of the Nyungne sets but please note – it is necessary to arrive at PTC by 8:00 pm the evening before any set as the practice begins as early as 5:00 am every day throughout the retreat. \nGuests attending a nyungne for the first time must speak to Lama Lhadrun before doing this practice. Please contact her by email or call 845-297-2500 (leaving both your name and phone number so that she can get back to you). \nWe do suggest that guests try to come for the 1st day of any given nyungne set\, but if that is not practical\, it is still possible to participate any day of the retreat. DESCRIPTION:The resident sangha of PTC will be chanting Sherab Nyingpo\, a practice based on the Heart Sutra. Sherab Nyingpo is an obstacle-averting practice that dispels unfavorable circumstances and promotes good conditions. The Heart Sutra is recited repeatedly as a means to purify obstacles created by the four maras (mental afflictions\, attachment to happiness\, clinging to the five skandhas\, death). The practice invokes the blessings of Prajnaparamita\, the Mother of all Buddhas. \nAs this is also Father’s Day\, the merit accumulated through participating in this practice will be dedicated to the countless beings who have been our fathers since beginningless time. \nChanting Sessions | 9:00 am & 1:30 pm \n  \nThis in-person event is also being offered on Zoom. DESCRIPTION:June 26 – 28\, Friday – Sunday | Drolma Yuldok\, a practice based on the 21 Taras \nThis three-day practice based on the 21 Taras\, known as Drolma Yuldok\, is chanted to remove obstacles and bring about auspicious conditions.  The central content of the chanting is the 21 Praises of Tara repeated with various offerings and prayers. \nChanting Schedule:\nFriday & Saturday | 9:00 am & 2:00 pm \nSunday | 9:00 am \n  \nJune 28\, Sunday (following Drolma Yuldok chanting) | Sür\, Evening Fire Offering Ceremony\nSür (an evening fire offering ceremony) is an offering to the four guests: the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas\, the Protector deities\, sentient beings\, and those with whom we have karmic debts.
