Our primary source\, Ornament of Precious Liberation\, by the great master of the Kagyu lineage\, Lord Gampopa\, is considered a spiritual classic of Tibetan Buddhism. HH 17th Karmapa shares in his foreword to the book\, that “this text has the power of a direct transmission from master to student” and that Gampopa himself promised that studying this text would be the same as receiving the teachings directly from him. \nIn order to develop our understanding of this profound work\, we will also be referring to Path to Buddhahood\, a very accessible and illuminating commentary by Ringu Tulku. \nThe books used will be:\nOrnament of Precious Liberation\, translator Ken Holmes\, Wisdom Publications\nPath to Buddhahood\, by Ringu Tulku\, Shambala \nThe material will be screen-shared each class\, so it is not necessary to buy the books. SUMMARY:Commemoration of Buddha's Joyful Day
DESCRIPTION:The observance of Buddha’s Joyful Day on the full moon day of the seventh lunar month is based on the story of Maudgalyayana\, a disciple of the Buddha\, who discovered through his meditative powers that his mother had been reborn as a hungry ghost. Distressed\, he approached the Buddha for help\, who then advised him to make offerings to the Sangha\, as the merit from doing so would help relieve the suffering of his mother and other beings in the lower realms. Buddha’s Joyful Day is observed by making offerings of necessities to monastics\, reciting sūtras and performing acts of generosity. The merit from these deeds is dedicated to all beings\, especially to relieve the suffering of the deceased. \n  \nAugust 30 (Saturday) \n6:00 am | Thousandfold Lamp Offering (Tong Chö)\nA traditional Tong Chö of 1\,000 butter lamps\, 1\,000 bowls of saffron water and 300 bowls filled with rice\, incense and flowers is offered weekly. \nThe following chanting session is being offered remotely. To participate via Zoom please click here. \n10:00 am | Kalu Rinpoche’s Practice of Aspiration Prayers (Monlam Choga)\, followed by the Short Practice of the Peaceful & Wrathful Deities (Shitro)\nMonlam Choga\, is a practice of offering and aspiration prayers compiled by Dorje Chang Kalu Rinpoche. This is followed by the short liturgy of Shitro (Peaceful and Wrathful Deities)\, a profound practice from the cycle of teachings and meditations of the Tibetan Book of the Dead. We dedicate this practice to the deceased in order to purify negativities\, avert obstacles in the bardo\, and establish a connection with the deities that will ripen in future lives. \nTo join the chanting please download Kalu Rinpoche’s Practice of Aspiration Prayers (Monlam Choga) \n  \n\nAugust 31 (Sunday) \nPlease join us as we make prayers and offerings for our parents\, ancestors\, and the deceased through a special recitation of the Amitabha sadhana with tsok offerings\, a fire puja for the deceased\, and aspiration prayers for the well being of us and all other beings\, especially those to whom we dedicate the practice by name\, both living and deceased. \n10:00 am | Chanting of Long Amitabha Sadhana\n1:30 pm | Continuation of chanting of Long Amitabha Sadhana with Tsok\, Jangchok Sadhana\, followed by Sür (special fire offering ceremony) \nTo participate via Zoom please click here. \n\nThe practice entitled ‘Jangchok’ will be included within the chanting of the Amitabha sadhana.  Jangchok is done for the benefit of the recently deceased to achieve liberation.  For persons who may have passed away a long time ago the Jangchok practice will still bring great blessings to the deceased and create the causes and conditions for the liberation of the person.  For the living\, it is said that once their karmic debtors are liberated through this practice\, the person will have less obstacles.  For all beings\, this practice will help to create favorable conditions and enhance their well-being. \nIt is said that\, “no matter how long ago your deceased dear ones or relatives have passed away\, it is still very vital to make prayers and offerings for them to increase their merit.” \nDuring the chanting of the Long Amitabha and Jangchok sadhanas all the names of the deceased will be blessed and burned to symbolize purification of their defilements\, obscurities and negative karma by the fire of wisdom\, ripening their merit to be reborn in Amitabha’s pureland of Dewachen. DESCRIPTION:July 18 – 20\, Friday – Sunday | Drolma Yuldok\, a practice based on the 21 Taras \nThis three-day practice based on the 21 Taras\, known as Drolma Yuldok\, is chanted to remove obstacles and bring about auspicious conditions.  The central content of the chanting is the 21 Praises of Tara repeated with various offerings and prayers. \nChanting Schedule:\nFriday & Saturday | 9:00 am & 2:00 pm \nSunday | 9:00 am \n  \nJuly 20\, Sunday (following Drolma Yuldok chanting) | Sür\, Evening Fire Offering Ceremony\nSür (an evening fire offering ceremony) is an offering to the four guests: the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas\, the Protector deities\, sentient beings\, and those with whom we have karmic debts. It averts obstacles and sickness and is dedicated to those who are dying\, to beings in the Bardo\, and to beings with whom we have karmic debts. \n  \nThis in-person event is also being offered on Zoom.
