The first students of Buddha Shakyamuni understood the need to create a practical environment to support their study, meditation, and practice. Under the guidance of the Buddha, they organized themselves into a community of like-minded practitioners known in Sanskrit as sangha. This practice of building a sangha has continued into the modern era, forming an effective antidote to the seemingly crucial distractions that all too easily come between us and our best intentions. In accordance with a tradition that extends back to the very earliest days of Buddhism, we invite you to become a member of Palpung Thubten Choling Monastery or one of our affiliated Dharma centers in the eastern United States. Membership is a meaningful way of participating in the Lama’s activities while accumulating merit and gaining support for your own study and practice. The Dharma center provides a setting where sangha members can receive empowerments and teachings, and participate in the traditional chanting and meditation practices of Tibetan Buddhism. It is also a place where newcomers can ask questions, and where more experienced practitioners can pass along the benefit of their long affiliation and training. In this way, each Dharma center functions to preserve and extend the rich legacy of Tibetan Buddhist practice.
