According to Buddhist custom, after passing from this life, a person spends 49 days in the bardo, the transitional interval before rebirth into the next life. Sur fire offerings, which are made daily during the 49 days, are said to be a powerful way to ease the suffering of the deceased by providing sustenance, and also to create an auspicious connection with the dharma on their behalf.
