The observance of Buddha’s Joyful Day on the full moon day of the seventh lunar month is based on the story of Maudgalyayana, a disciple of the Buddha. Buddha’s Joyful Day is observed by making offerings of necessities to monastics, reciting sūtras and performing acts of generosity.
We chant and meditate on Chenrezig in order to realize our inborn great compassion. Guru Vajradhara Tai Situ Rinpoche has said that, “Chenrezig is the embodiment of compassion, Bodhicitta. Sür (evening fire offering ceremony) is an offering to the 4 guests: the Buddhas & Bodhisattvas; Protectors; sentient beings; and those with whom we have karmic debts. It averts obstacles and sickness and is dedicated to those who are dying, beings in the Bardo, and to beings with whom we have karmic debts.
